Free/Libre Open Source Quality Models - a comparison between two approaches

چکیده

This paper presents a comparison of a first generation software quality model (OpenBRR) and a second generation software quality model (QualOSS) by applying them to the case of Asterisk, a FLOSS implementation of a telephone private branch exchange (PBX, VoIP). Examining the trends and evolution of software quality models and identifying differences in the approaches and assessment outcomes, the results indicate significant progress in the development of open source quality models. However, it appears that tool support, which characterizes the second generation quality model, does not achieve to fully support the need for human interference. Therefore, future FLOSS quality models might call either for an even stronger reliance on tools and the abandonment of the human factor, or for an effective integration of both; the human factor and tools support. Effective, in this regard, means that the subjectivity aligned with human interference becomes marginal. At any rate, it appears that there is still a way to go.

Comparing OpenBRR, QSOS, and OMM Assessment Models

The objective of this study was to investigate the quality and usability of three Free/Libre Open Source Software assessment models: the Open Business Readiness Rating (OpenBRR), the Qualification and Selection of Open Source software (QSOS), and the QualiPSo OpenSource Maturity Model (OMM). The study identified the positive and negative aspects of each of them. The models were used to assess t...

Using Free/Libre Open Source Software Projects as E-learning Tools

Free/Libre Open Source Software (FLOSS) projects can be considered as learning environments in which heterogeneous communities get together to exchange knowledge through discussion and put it into practice through actual contributions to software development, revision and testing. This has encouraged tertiary educators to attempt the inclusion of participation in FLOSS projects as part of the r...

Measuring Open Source Quality: A Literature Review

There is an ample debate over the quality of Free/Libre Open Source Software (FLOSS) with mixed research results. The authors show that a reason for these mixed results is that quality is being defined, measured, and evaluated differently. They report the most popular approaches including software structure measures, process measures, and maturity assessment models. The way researchers have bui...

A structurational perspective on leadership in Free/Libre Open Source Software teams1

In this conceptual paper, we present a structuration-based theory of leadership behaviours in self-organizing virtual distributed teams such as Free/Libre Open Source Software development teams. Such teams are often composed of members of relatively equal status or who are so disparate in background that formal organizational status seems irrelevant, reducing the usual leadership cues provided ...
